Welcome to Optocoach
At Optocoach, we provide courses for pre-registration optometrist trainees working through the College of Optometrists’ scheme for registration and for ophthalmology trainees preparing for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ Refraction Certificate Exam.
Courses include assisting pre-registration optometrist trainees in preparation for their Stage 2 assessment and the final Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).
In preparation for the OSCE, all trainees will undertake a mock OSCE circuit which includes four categories of OSCE stations – Clinical Examination and Practical Skills, History Taking, Communication and Data Interpretation.
Stage 1
Trainees are observed performing generic tasks in their practice and examined on 75 elements of competence. Stage 1 is generally completed in three to five assessment visits.
Stage 2
Trainees are observed in their practice for three to four hours. The assessment includes observation of the trainee performing a routine eye examination, a soft contact lens fitting and aftercare and assessment of records.
The OSCE
Trainees are examined on a selection of the 75 GOC elements of competence reviewed during Stage 1 and Stage 2. The OSCE format includes a series of 16, five minute stations and one rest station.

What our trainees say
I had failed my OSCE twice and I was really worried about the remaining two attempts, so my friend recommended Optocoach. I attended the one to one mock OSCE course by Atique (Optocoach). I had failed my OSCEs the first time round and was on my second attempt. The setup is great as it gives you a trial of how the real OSCE stations will be. Plus the setup allowed Atique to see which areas needed … Read More

The Optocoach course was recommended to me by a friend who had completed it himself. Until this point my OSCE preparation was somewhat all over the place. I was struggling to structure my revision, with no real idea/experience of what to expect from the exam. Having completed both the course and the exam, I can … Read More
